ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE, MACHINE LEARNING (AI/ML).

Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning (AI/ML) today are fundamentally changing nearly every business in the economy. While effective algorithms exist, they are limited by the need for huge training sets, reliability uncertainties, limited range of applicability, and concerns about bias and fairness that hinder widespread acceptance. The Sanghani Center for Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics focuses its cross-institutional efforts on not just algorithmic advancements, but on developing adaptable and user-friendly platforms for reliable AI/ML implementations.

NEXT G WIRELESS.

The telecom industry is on the cusp of widely deploying 5G technology, which offers orders of magnitude improvement in data rates and reduced latency than its predecessor creating unprecedented opportunities for applications such as the internet of things (IoT), cloud services, autonomy, etc. However, this deployment is also unravelling several limitations and unsolved challenges in 5G, such as the difficulty of achieving high reliability and meeting the demands of emerging use cases like extended reality, which calls for new innovations in the space of wireless communications and networking. Hence, it is imperative to address those challenges by creating new scientific foundations for the next-generation of wireless systems, such as 6G in the cellular world and Wi-Fi 8 for wireless local area networks (LANs). The Innovation Campus, in close collaboration with vested parties at Virginia Tech (e.g., VT-Applied Research CorporationNational Security InstituteCommonwealth Cyber Initiative and Wireless@VT) and in the tech industries, is actively embarking on this 6G and Beyond journey, thereby fostering the University’s national and international leadership in research and development of wireless technologies.

QUANTUM ARCHITECTURE AND SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT.

Quantum computing, communication, and sensing have inherent advantages in certain applications over classical computing based on von Neumann bits, gates and logic. However, unlocking that potential requires further advances in quantum materials, devices, system design, error correction and logic. With financial support from Northrop Grumman, and in close partnership with the Virginia Tech Center for Quantum Information Science and Engineering (VTQ), the Innovation Campus will establish a premier research group focused on the analytical and algorithmic subareas of QIST. The Innovation Campus will be home to the Center for Quantum Architecture and Software Development.

INTELLIGENT INTERFACES.

Intelligent interfaces are interactive technologies that combine the complementary strengths of human intelligence and artificial intelligence (AI). Research in intelligent interfaces focuses on understanding or improving these technologies, and finding better ways for people to interact with them. At Virginia Tech, our research in intelligent interfaces takes a human-centered approach, seeking to augment, rather than replace, human capabilities and enable a more productive, ethical future of work. Our Center for Human-Computer Interaction brings together faculty experts from across the university to collaborate with experts in industry, academia, and government to design, build, and evaluate a wide range of technologies, from augmented reality to social media to autonomous vehicles and crowdsourcing. With financial support from The Boeing Company, our acclaimed faculty work in collaborative, immersive research spaces to invent the future of intelligent interfaces for individuals, organizations, and societies.

At the Innovation Campus, cutting-edge research and strong industry partnerships go hand in hand. Find out more about how partnerships can support the future of technology, create exciting experiential learning opportunities, and drive the tech talent pipeline.
