  • What: Using data to make better decisions in a complex world is one of the greatest challenges and opportunities of our century. Virginia Tech’s Global Business and Analytics Complex will cement the university as a world leader in developing methods for data analysis and interpretation, and in using data to address problems faced by industry and society.
    • The complex will include four buildings on the university’s main campus in Blacksburg and will be a major feature of the campus. Plans call for:
      • Two academic buildings approximately 115,000 square feet each, located near Prices Fork Road. The first building under construction that is offered for the “hard hat” tour is the Data and Decision Sciences Building with classrooms, labs, team rooms, and offices for faculty from across the university; and open workspaces for collaborative teaching and research projects.
      • The second building will be Pamplin College of Business’ new location also with labs, team rooms, offices, workspaces for collaborative teaching and research projects, and will be connected through the grand commons. Two residence halls located south of The Inn at Virginia Tech and Skelton Conference Center in the university’s proposed campus village will offer housing for 700 students and living-learning communities related to analytics, international business, and entrepreneurship.
  • Together, these buildings will bring top students and faculty, who share a passion for an analytic approach to problems, together in collaborative work environments for transdisciplinary research and hands-on-learning, as well as enhance the talent pipeline for the business community in the era of big data and the new technology economy. The complex will improve our ability to secure research funding and make a greater impact within the community and beyond.

In response to this issue, the university is exploring different ways to support students experiencing food insecurity and other issues with basic needs. One of the programs created to support students is The Market of Virginia Tech, which is an innovative food access program designed to assist undergraduate and graduate students on a sustained basis throughout the semester or year (or as long as they need support.) Each week, students enroll in the program and pick up groceries that include fresh and local produce and protein, pantry items, and snacks. The program started in summer 2020, and since then more than 19,000 meals (approximately 5,200 in the fall of 2021) have been provided to students in need. Join us at the new location for The Market of Virginia Tech for a tour of the space and learn more about the program from the team who runs it.

Ryan Williams, assistant professor in the Bradley Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, will share about the work that he does to help these efforts through his research.
