Signs and symptoms: Seasonal flu

  • Rapid onset of fever (greater than 101°F)
  • Dry cough
  • Sneezing
  • Sore throat
  • Headache
  • Muscle and joint aches
  • Extreme tiredness
  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Chills

Stomach symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, also can occur but are more common in children than adults.

Signs and symptoms: Influenza A (H1N1) “Swine Flu” 

The symptoms are similar to the symptoms of human influenza and include:

  • Rapid onset of Fever (greater than 101°F)
  • Dry cough
  • Sneezing
  • Sore throat
  • Headache
  • Muscle and joint aches
  • Extreme tiredness / fatigue
  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Chills
  • Diarrhea and vomiting are associated with H1N1

As with any flu, swine flu may cause a worsening of underlying chronic medical conditions

Emergency Warning Signs

If you become ill and experience any of the following warning signs:

  1. Self isolate
  2. Seek emergency medical care

In children emergency warning signs that need urgent medical attention include:

  • Fast breathing or trouble breathing
  • Bluish or grayish skin color
  • Not drinking enough fluids
  • Sever or persistent vomiting
  • Not waking up or not interacting
  • Being so irritable that the child does not want to be held
  • Flu-like symptoms improve but then return with fever and worse cough
  • Fever with a rash

In adults, emergency warning signs that need urgent medical attention include:

  • Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
  • Pain or pressure in the chest or abdomen
  • Sudden dizziness
  • Confusion
  • Severe or persistent vomiting
