Starting as a humble log cabin constructed in 1801, Solitude is Virginia Tech’s oldest structure.
Virginia Tech, then known as Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College, purchased the house, several farm buildings, and 250 acres of land in 1872 from Robert Preston, the son of Virginia Gov. James P. Preston.
Solitude, which has served in various capacities through the years, was placed on the Virginia Landmarks Register in 1988 and the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.
