On Oct. 10, 2013, a truck from Steinway & Sons delivered six pianos to the Center for the Arts at Virginia Tech. Movers unloaded, uncrated, and assembled the pianos — two concert grands (nine foot), one grand (seven foot), and two uprights.

In 2012, Associate Provost for the Arts Ruth Waalkes, the center’s executive, toured the Steinway factory in New York City and hand-picked the six pianos with Jay Crone, associate professor and assistant director of the School of Performing Arts, and Tracy Cowden, associate professor of piano and vocal coach in the Department of Music.
