Hutcheson Hall

   

Hutcheson Hall Hutcheson Hall, seen from the Ag Quad side of the building, houses offices and classrooms for the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, in addition to offices for the Virginia Cooperative Extension Service.

Academics and agricultural administration; completed February 1940. Cost $206,000; 39,280 sq. ft, Originally known as New Agricultural Hall. Dedicated July 31, 1957.

Thomas Barksdale Hutcheson

Thomas Barksdale Hutcheson (1882-1950) was Head of the Department of Agronomy from 1914 to 1945 and Dean of the School of Agriculture from 1946 to 1950. He lived in the dairy barn at Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College and Polytechnic Institute (Virginia Tech), working his way through college by milking cows. Widely known later for his agricultural research and writing, Hutcheson and his brother John, helped develop Virginia's livestock, poultry, and dairy industries and moved the state from a tobacco and cotton economy into a sounder diversified agriculture.

John Redd Hutcheson

John Redd Hutcheson (1886-1962) was Director of the Agricultural Extension Service from 1919 to 1945, President from 1945 to 1947, Chancellor from 1947 to 1956, and President of the VPI Foundation from 1948 to 1962. Alumnus President Hutcheson worked tirelessly to prepare VPI for the flood of returning World War II veterans and developed a sense of optimism and pride on campus. A nationally noted agricultural leader, he received numerous honors, including Doctor of Science degrees from both Clemson and North Carolina State Colleges. The affable man served as VPI's only chancellor.
