Thomas Marshall Hahn Jr.

Thomas Marshall Hahn Jr. (1926- ) was Head of the Department of Physics from 1954 to 1959, President from 1962 to 1974, and was named President Emeritus in 1975. Considered to be one of the university's greatest presidents, Hahn engineered Virginia Tech's evolution from a college to a major research university. The dynamic leader severed ties with Radford College and made the corps of cadets voluntary, spurring record enrollments of women and unprecedented growth in the student body, degree programs, faculty, research, and physical plant. At age 35, he became Tech's youngest president.
