Joseph Dupuy Eggleston Jr.

Joseph Dupuy Eggleston Jr. (1867-1953) was President from 1913 to 1919. Known initially for his work as Virginia's superintendent of public instruction, he built public support for VPI and laid the foundation for a strong alumni association. Ahead of his time, Eggleston believed that education involved "development of the whole life." His directive to depart from the poverty-stricken, factory type of architecture then employed led to the neo-Gothic, Hokie Stone buildings that now grace the campus.
