Cowgill Hall

Cowgill Hall Cowgill Hall, seen from the Perry Street side, houses classrooms and labs, and the offices for the College of Architecture and Urban Studies.

Academics and Architecture administration; construction begun 1966; major work completed 1969; dedicated April 30, 1970. Cost $1,388,968; 68,417 sq.ft. Building represents first major departure from traditional neo-Gothic architecture in academic buildings on campus; first building expressly for architecture use.

Clinton Harriman Cowgill

Clinton Harriman Cowgill (1897-1975) was Department Head of Architectural Engineering from 1928 to 1956. As the founder of VPI's Department of Architectural Engineering, forerunner of today's architecture program, Cowgill guided the department's growth from 34 students and two professors to 229 students and 13 professors. He wrote two books on architecture and building; served on the Virginia State Board for Examination and Certification of Professional Engineers, Architects, and Land Surveyors; and played a significant role in planning the physical development of the campus.
