The Institute for Critical Technology and Applied Science (ICTAS) building contains engineering-led research labs, offices, and workspaces. ICTAS I serves as the research institute's headquarters.

The institute supports and promotes cutting edge research at the intersection of engineering, science and medicine.

  • The ICTAS Nanoscale Characterization and Fabrication Laboratory is in the Corporate Research Center, adjacent to the Virginia Tech campus.
  • Construction of a third building in the Life Sciences quadrangle of the Virginia Tech campus, is expected to conclude early 2011.
  • Construction of a National Capital Region facility in Ballston, Va., is under way. That seven-floor, 144,000-square foot-building also is expected to be finished in 2011.
